Long Hair for male characters - Kain's Hair (2024)

Yeah, what else to say?

Disclaimer first: Gonna be bloody honest,as I always am about my arts and works(and in case you don't already know from my statement in the Modder's Resource: Hairstyles Uploadhere) - I usually only mod for private mod usage. Means I normally don't share mods publicly, because I'm simply not the type for maintenance works @ updates. Luckily this kinda mod will most probably be version-independent. So this mod is a final as-is state and will only be changed/updated if I need a detail to be changed that annoys me or I can find a way to optimize eventual clipping even more.

Background/Motivation:
As there are basically no long hair styles in ER, only at best shoulder lengths, I was very glad to see Ikaros' depiction of a long-hair style for female characters.
Inspiration for this specific, final style was Kain (Blood Omen 2 variant mostly) from the Legacy of Kain franchise. As there's already a great mod existing to deliver the Blood/Soul Reaverand to me the character model I learned to know Kain was with Blood Omen 2, this will always be the main orientation on how Kain should be and look.

However, now here's a hairstyle that is a mix out of his initial, plain long Blood Omen 2 Hair and a ponytail accent added with the later games as a - to me - very first, serious option for male characters.

BUT you need to test the function yourself here. I just did a convenience update for you to Beta test it here, as I was able to quickly do it, but I don't have a working game version installed here, only an old ghost of a frozen version we played in co-op. ~Anyways:
One time offer: Leave a comment and let me know if it works right now. I will re-check the mod page the next days a bit more to look at feedback, but this will decrease over time, as I can already promise you. Just being honest.
As you might have noticed, I also uploaded
the below mentioned female versionas well. I know we didn't reach the 25 mark in 2023, but to hell with it. It was an experiment anyways and I had the hair style for our sessions created and adjusted anyways, so tell me how you like it.

Done in this final update:
- Updated the supposedly working DLC compatible version of the Male Hairstyle.
- Uploaded the new Female Version of the Hairstyle now as a premiere! Enjoy!

Credit and Background to this update:

The reason why I could upload a fix quickly:

Send your thanks toZLOHORT

, for sharing a simple method to update the mod through a rather uncomplicated process I could easily squeeze into my busy daily process that have nothing to do with modding anymore. Yeah I did the final steps to the update myself, BUT: Really,

send this guy some love or Kudos

if you can, he's a truly skilled asset of a Soulslike-Artist and dedicated to Modding.

I am certain we would have NO hair mods for ER still if he didn't share his knowledge with the guys here around. So he rly invested into these topics, different than hobby modders like me.

I am simple off the radar for ER modding meanwhile. I just wasted too much time with modding this overly complicated game modding wise. I'm just not into soulslike games enough to love this crap of a job coming with the maintenance, even if I had the time left.

ModEngine 2: (recommended)

  • Download and setup ModEngine 2. (Make sure to do the obvious, like disabling CheatEngine, play offline, ect)
  • Download my mod-hair version here and make sure to put the mod folder in the mod folder. Path should look like "ModEngine-2.0.0-preview3-win64\mod"

Done.

If you've done everything right, your mod folder now contains a new/updated parts-folder and a menu-folder.

Non-ModEngine 2 way:
Ofc you can also unpack all vanilla files with UXM, ignore the ModEngine 2 convenience way totally and replace files in the games-folder directly then. But you wanna make a backup of all vanilla files in general, else it's gonna be messy if you need to recover things later.

Additional variants?
As teasered above, I have worked much too long on trying to perfectionate this hair style to fit with most armors and prevent possible glitching. It now is best possible and I hope you enjoy it as I do in our co-op playthrough. It is possible I may upload a variant as creativity gets the better of me.

  • "Can you maybe make a more female version from it?"
While there's ofc already the source hair mod available for females, I could imagine to have a version of the Kain-variant here with some more strains framing the face instead of having a big pony over your maybe effortful generated face. ;)I am curious how popular ER still is, so let's make a stretch-goal challenge:
If we can reach the🏆25 Endorsements mark, I'll upload a more feminine version, focusing on beautifying the frontal hair row.🤷
(If we still reach the goal in 2023, I will track and do this automatically, if 2023 is gone without reaching the mark, you can play the friendly reminder and I see what I can find still)
- Whatever. Uploaded now.

  • ZLOHORTfor granting permission to use his base model, the incredible guidance, patience and offering of a helping hand in order to get myself through the process of modding hair styles for ER. Thanks for the open mind, great exchange and expertise in souls-modding, Sir! Part of the frontal head hair is from one of his indirectly released works here. His personal engagement in helping and general modding is just epic!

  • Ikaros473for granting permission to use his base model, as well as delivering the very reason to get into modding hair styles at all with publishing hisRealistic Long Hairmod that delivered the very basement to start a merge process in order to have me turning the female-oriented hair style into a male version eventually with this mod here. The back hair comes from his mod's mesh.

  • "Which hairstyle does this mod replace?"
Ugly-Vanilla-Hair#16 (or for the parts' folder: 0002)
Have a look at the pictures uploaded with this mod, the time you're reading this there should be a visual there. But I did the extra work to alter the miniature icon in character creator, so you will see a different icon even there.

  • "Why didn't you make a new hair slot?"
I did in tests for myself, but this is bound to regbin editing and most people aren't even doing that editing-effort by themselves, so I made it a replacer as a much easier plug-and-play variant. It's not that this game is missing ugly hairstyles no one misses, so I picked one of those I would miss the least.

  • "Which armor/helmet Masks is this hairstyle using?"
After some effortful tests and finding false DSMapStudio descriptions:

Masks: 60; 63; 64; 65; 66; 67, 68 & 69
I assume you know what you're doing when asking yourself that. If you don't, you'll probably not need it.
If you wanna know: Each mask has an individual hair mesh set up for specific armor thicknesses and/or helmet versions. So the long hair would clip hard into the armor with having the normal hair mesh+thick armor, so there's an extra version of that. In the Initial upload the thickest armor version causes the open hair-style to become a bound ponytail to avoid the heavy clipping and weird uplifting of the hair. I may be uploading an alt version with open hair as well some time however.

You can alter active masks on a specific armor by

  • using the DSMapStudio,
  • going to the "Param Editor" Tab,
  • clicking at the EquipParamProtector list entry on the left list and
  • picking in the middle list the armor you wanna see altered.
  • When you found it, scroll down in the right list menu to find the masks and look for the above listed masks.

Tip 1: Masks 66-69 are regulating the long hair parts, mostly relevant for
Tip 2: If one mask entry has a checked checkbox, this means the mask mesh with that number is turned off for this armor/helmet. Uncheck to make it visible for this item while wearing it.

(Occasionally Asked Questions)

"Can you update the mod to the latest version, because convenience & y-not?"
No, read the disclaimer, I don't work like that. If the mod isn't broken, there's no need to update it for fixes. And I don't start updating a mod only for the mod manager to be satisfied with last update date, while nothing is being changed internally.

  • "Can you make a cloth-physics version (real quick)?"
Nice try but nope, sry. :)
As I originally didn't wanna start a months-spanning study how to mod ER models in 3D, everything took longer than expected already, so I was happy to be done with the working bone-physics version of it. I know it's not perfect for nowadays games, but on the other hand games are not perfect too, because what's "perfect" is an individual opinion and the very reason we have modders.

  • "Your advice of the day/year?"
Bloody honest one? If you're not dying for the soulslike-franchise, better learn to mod another game engine.*shrugs* I don't know what's been the plan here, like making modding as hard as possible, but it's unnecessary complicated to get into this game's modding. I've been modding now since.. I dunno, let it be 15yrs in different engines and this is definitely one of the worst to mod, workflow-technically. ;)
If you can't imagine what I mean, take a look at the guide I released for/within the hair modding only in myModder's Resource: Hairstylesupload.
